Viewing Past Events in LW

We have a WP plugin that can display either future or past events, but I’m wondering whether it’s possible for a front-end user to access a list of past events in LiveWhale.

All future events can be viewed at UConn Calendar, for example.

Is there a way to view all past events for a group (not in the Dashboard, but for a front end user)?

You can use the start_date and end_date widget args to accomplish this. Something like…

<arg id="start_date">-2 years</arg>
<arg id="end_date">today</arg>

I used -2 years as an example to include all events within the past two years, but you could change that to include whatever range you want. If you put a date in there that is prior to your oldest event, it would include all past events.

You may also want to change the sort order on the widget if you want the latest events to be at the top.

<arg id="sort_order">reverse-date</arg>

Thanks for jumping in Jon!

We’ve got options like that built into our plugin/block, but the issue is that we have to set X number of events to display and I need to offer the option for people to view all. I want to add a button below the feed to [View All Past Events] and am hoping for a page that I can link to.

TL;DR: Within the calendar, we’ve got a button for [List of Upcoming Events] and I’m wondering if there’s an equivalent for [List of Past Events].

I see what you mean. I was assuming you were using a widget. I’m not sure how to do something similar in the calendar itself. Hopefully someone else will weigh in with a solution.

@karl - Any help you can offer with this?

Hi guys!

Alexa, as Jon notes, widgets are the most common way forward with this kind of thing. Recently Harvard College used a widget for past events in their academic calendar:
https://events.college.harvard.edu/academic_calendar/?past

With a widget you can specify all those details like sort order, date range, etc. And in this case the widget displays inside the calendar because the Academic Calendar group theme has a main.html include that’s customized to show this widget instead of the default page whenever that GET variable is present.

There’s no handy-dandy “View All Past Events” as you suggest, though that’s probably something that could be customized to your needs by my team. What you can do — though I’m not sure if this would meet your need or not — is add a starting date to the All view, and set that to the beginning of time according to UConn’s calendar, which appears to be 2021. So something like this:

https://events.uconn.edu/all/date/20210101/

… would show you all past events.

(We do optimize calendar performance by preloading upcoming events but not past ones; I do note that paging through that “all 2021 events” view is a little slower than doing the same for upcoming events.)

That said, depending on the context (is this for a group? or calendar-wide?) a widget integrated into the calendar itself might be the best bet here. Drop a line to support if you’d like our help with that!
