Uploading Images with Embedded Captions

Sometimes we upload images from somewhere like Getty that already have captions in the metadata. When uploading, those captions get automatically put into the caption field. We would prefer those embedded captions go into the ALT field instead. So we have been copying them manually. But even when we delete the text from the caption field during upload, the embedded caption still gets saved into the image’s caption field. Ideally, if we delete the caption text during upload, the caption should stay empty upon saving.

I discovered that if you replace the caption that comes from the metadata with a “space” character instead of just deleting it, that works. It prevents the caption from saving with the image, but the space character does not get saved either. But I still wish we didn’t have to do this.

Disclaimer: I reported this issue to LiveWhale support in 2023, and they acknowledged that they were able to reproduce the issue and that it was noted as a bug to be resolved in an upcoming release. Since it does not appear that a fix has yet been released, I am posting again here for renewed visibility.

Thanks Jon! We’re slated to do a pretty big Caption/ALT revamp in LW3.0 based on some accumulated feedback, so I’ll add this to that issue for tracking. Apologies for losing track of the 2023 version of this bug report!
