Major repeating events bug

I am having major bug issues with repeating events taking on a life of their own, changing dates of occurrences and adding new occurrences on random dates. For example, we have a Staff Council General Body Meeting the third Thursday of each month so I created a series of repeating monthly events, which looked fine when I saved it. But as soon as I attempt to make any sort of edit to the series or one of its occurrences, it goes bananas, adding a bunch of extra occurrences on random dates and changing the date of most of the occurrences from Thursdays to to Wednesdays. For example, if I try to hide one occurrence, or edit one that is in a different location, it happens This is the third time I have had to delete the entire series and start over from scratch - but it is still happening with each brand new series I create. FWIW we just upgraded from 2.19 to 2.21 and it was happening before the upgrade, and still happening after. It’s happened to a couple of our other groups as well.

For now I turned off the repeats so there is only one event showing on Aug 21: Staff Council General Body Meeting / CMU Events Calendar

Is anyone else seeing this happening? As a workaround I can duplicate the original event 10 times and change the date on each duplicate but that is obviously more work.

Thanks for looking into this.

Hi Jen,

Thanks for reporting this and sorry to hear it’s giving you so much trouble. That’s certainly not the experience we expect or want you to have with repeating events.

We’ll work to test and try to recreate using the steps you’ve outlined and let you know what we find out. Or if anyone else is having a similar issue, please let us know. More soon—thanks,
Rachael

Hi Jen,

I haven’t been able to successfully trigger any of the issues you’ve described here when testing a repeating event. I wonder if you’re able to list out some detailed steps to recreate? And if possible, could you include a screenshot of how you’ve got the repeat set for the event?

Hopefully with some additional information we can keep at this. Let us know, thanks!
Rachael

Hi Rachael. I made a screen recording of what happens at the link below. You’ll see I create a repeating monthly event, and then when I simply try to hide one of the occurrences, it creates new occurrences on new dates and also moves existing occurrences to other dates.

Hi Jen,

Thanks, this is very useful – it appears that this is a bug affecting certain repeating series where USE_AP_STYLE is used for the sitewide date display. We’re working on drilling down to a root cause and will let you know when we have a fix. Apologies for the inconvenience in the meantime,

Karl

Hi Jen,

Good news, we were able to isolate a fix for this and included it in today’s LiveWhale 2.21.1 release: What’s New in LiveWhale 2.21.1 • Release Notes

That’ll be heading to dev servers this weekend and available for upgrades starting September 7, 2025.

Thanks for bringing it to our attention!
Karl

Thanks so much, Karl!
