Just posting this idea in case it would be useful to anyone else.
I am always afraid of messing up the production server because I thought I was on the dev server when I wasn’t (it has happened), so I implemented a pretty easy way to visually indicate the dev server by changing the color scheme of the administrative controls. The screenshots show how our dev server looks in the back end as well as the tool bar when logged-in on the front end. Only two style files were needed and they are both pretty small and basic. I’m happy to share more details and the code if anyone is interested…
Now I always know which machine I’m messing up!
