We have custom notes fields for people to fill in when they create events and news items. The other day, an event was deleted, but those notes were needed again later, so the event was restored (to see the notes). When the event was restored, the data in the custom note fields was gone and the fields were empty. Is this the expected behavior?

Thanks for writing! I believe the intended behavior is that all fields (including custom ones) travel with the item to the trash and can be restored from there. We’ll do some testing on our end to see if this is a core LW bug we can reproduce and will report back with our findings.
In the interim—depending on when the item was deleted—the automatic nightly backups of your data could also be used in a pinch to hunt down some data that might’ve been erroneously lost; let me know if we can offer more guidance on that option.
